Concern is rising over the poor garbage management at Hoima central market’s temporary site in Boma grounds, Hoima town.

The garbage point is situated just outside the market site. Despite the fact that about five containers are placed around the site for the market users to dump garbage, it’s carelessly thrown outside the containers.

The heavy rains have worsened the situation and vendors now fear the outbreak of diseases. But Hoima Deputy Mayor Ronald Basiima puts the blame on the market vendors, saying they irresponsibly dump garbage outside the skips.

Basiima reveals that although the skips are emptied every day, vendors dump garbage on the ground. He says this requires the municipal council to use a wheel loader to first carry the garbage to the skips before it’s taken away.

But Robert Kunihira, the secretary Hoima United Market Vendors Association, says the problem is beyond the market management. Kunihira says much as they encourage vendors to properly dispose of garbage, other town dwellers come and dump it at night.

Hoima Central Market was in October last year moved to the Boma to pave way for reconstruction and modernization of the original site in the heart of Hoima town. The new market is expected to cost 13 billion shillings.

However, government seems to be coming in to solve Hoima’s garbage concerns. Through the National Environmental Management Authority-NEMA, a 2.3 billion shilling garbage composting plant has been built for the municipality.

The plant that will be turning garbage into manure was officially commissioned on Wednesday evening at Kibati in the outskirts of Hoima town. Dr. Gerald Saula, the Acting NEMA Executive Director, says the plant is one way of enhancing solid waste management in towns which has been a great problem.

Residents in Hoima town have many times gone on streets to protest the poor garbage management.
