Fort-Portal Municipal council authorities are looking for one billion shillings for garbage management in the municipality. Edison Ruyonga, fort-portal municipality Mayor, says the money is needed to purchase at least four Garbage collection trucks and more than 60 garbage skips. He explained that the garbage skips are a priority because the garbage must be collected in one place before it is dumped in Kiteere garbage recycling plant. According to the Mayor, Garbage management remains one of the major challenges faced by fort-portal municipality. He said that the problem has persisted over a long time because there is only one truck and Garbage skip used to collect the garbage accumulated in all the major divisions. Addressing Political leaders in Fort-Portal, the mayor said that the municipality is seeking support from both the local and international organization, to find ways of enforcing better garbage management in the municipality. Fort-Portal is one of the nine towns which will benefit from the World Bank funded garbage recycling project. Under the project, the World Bank will work with the National environment Management Authority (NEMA) to enhance their capacity to fight garbage.
