Uganda-born Rev. John Sentamu was yesterday consecrated the 97th Archbishop of York today. Sentamu's consecration makes him the first black Archbishop to ascend to the highest position in the Church of England. The Archbishop of the Church of England, Rowan Williams, inaugurated Sentamu and anointed him with oil as a symbol of strength. The festivities to install the Sentamu saw him ascend in a boat on River House to the sound of the Ugandan drum and songs. He then released doves and balloons into the air. The Bishops of York surrounded him as he took the oath. Archbishop Sentamu has vowed to fight homosexuality in the Church and supports the ordination of women bishops.
