Three people have been killed in road accidents in Mbale town since Christmas. Patrick Lachen-Otika, the Mbale traffic officer, says the first fatal accident occurred on Christmas Eve. He says Aaron Pande, a Makerere University student, knocked two soldier's wives near Bugema. One of the women, Aisa Nadunga, died on the spot. The second woman, Brenda Arinaitwe, passed away at Mbale Main Hospital on Christmas day. On Tuesday another fatal accident occurred when a primary school teacher riding a motorcycle, hit and killed a 13-year-old boy. Nicholas Okeny, the teacher at Preparatory Primary School in Mbarara, was arrested and the Local Government-registered motorcycle he was riding was impounded. Lachen-Otika says traffic accidents in and around Mbale town reduced this Christmas because of the increased number of police patrolling major roads and highways. He says a number of people were fined for over speeding and four men were arrested for drunk driving. The police operation will continue until the end of the New Year's holiday.
