Mutukula border town, in Rakai district is witnessing a sudden surge in the number of prostitutes. Matthias Kasamba, the Kakuuto Sub-county Member of Parliament, says there has been a significant increase in the number of female prostitutes, recorded over the past six months. Kasamba explains that the surge was noticeable at the peak of the Kenya's political crisis. Most of the alleged prostitutes gained access to Mutukula through Tanzania. The trade has been boosted by the Truck drivers who had also resorted to using the Tanzanian routes. Erias Mugisha, The Rakai District HIV/Aids Focal person, says that the situation has been made worse by a group of traffickers who are penetrating the villages to recruit young girls into prostitution. Most of the girls being targeted come from poor families, with no stable incomes to look after their children. Faced with no choice, Girls as young as 13 years, willingly enter into prostitution, with the hope for better life. Mugisha says HIV/AIDS prevalence rates in Mutukula have increased from 11% to 13%. He however says that the authorities are not ready to seat and watch as prostitution takes root in Mutukula. He says her office will work with the police to crack down on the perpetrators of the prostitution business.
