President Yoweri Museveni has handed over the land title for Plot 30 William Street to Uganda Muslim Supreme Council after securing the same from business tycoon Drake Lubega.

The land title was presented to the Mufti of Uganda Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje during Juma prayers at Old Kampala this afternoon. He said the title was secured after paying off city tycoon Drake Lubega who had bought it from businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba at a cost of 2 million US Dollars.

The land that houses Masjid Noor Mosque and up to 50 shops on William Street has been a center of controversy since 2005 sparked off by reports that the administration of Mufti Shaban Mubaje had sold it to Haks Express Ltd, a company owned by Basajabalaba.

The controversy led to the split of the Muslim fraternity in Uganda and the birth of the Kibuli-based faction now led by Sheik Silliman Kasule Ndilangwa. The Kibuli faction was contesting the illegal sale of Muslim properties and accused Mubaje of betraying them.

Now Museveni says that the return of the land title is a key step in resolving Muslim wrangles.

Museveni also pledged to renovate the Gadaffi National Mosque saying the structure is vital to the country basing on its contribution to the tourism sector in Uganda.

Mufti Shaban Ramathan Mubaje welcome the initiative saying it will unify Muslim factions which were disunited because of the land in question.
