Mini Price Bata, shop that has served as a major landmark in Kampala for more than two decades, is to be demolished in the next few weeks. Mini Price Bata is located on Plot 48 and 50 at the junction of Ben Kiwanuka Street, Luwum Street and Namirembe Road. An announcement placed in the newspapers this week said the building has been purchased by a local businessman called John Ssebalamu. Ssebalamu plans to build a large shopping arcade on the plots. The building to be demolished houses more than 200 shops that sell everything from clothing to food and stationery to shoes. Paul Kamya, one of the tenants, welcomes the development. He says he and his colleagues plan to return to the prime city location once the building is completed. //Cue in: iWe are supposed #i Cue out: i# in the same place.i// Many of the traders have moved next door into Midland City Arcade. They told Uganda Radio Network that the proprietor of Midland City Arcade, Tom Kitandwe, charges two million shillings per month for twelve months, which is very high compared to the rent they have been paying.
