Independent presidential candidate, John Patrick Amama Mbabazi on Friday made a surprise visit to Masindi Central Police Station in an effort to secure a police bond for Rogers Kanti, his campaign coordinator in the district.

Kanti was arrested by police on Thursday as he tried to enter Masindi hospital, which was heavily guarded by police ahead of Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate, rtd Col Dr Kizza Besigye's campaign in the area.

Mbabazi arrived at Masindi Central Police Station at around 1pm, but his convoy was not allowed to enter into the police compound. However, Mbabazi was allowed to access the station, which is currently out of bounds for journalists.

Mbabazi spent about an hour in a meeting with Bosco Bakashaba, the Masindi District Police Commander.

Speaking to journalists, Mbabazi said they had agreed with the DPC that Kanti will be released but at a later time. Mbabazi condemned the police for denying opposition political leaders access to Health facilities and churches, arguing that they also have patients and faith.

Mbabazi also held a closed meeting with his campaign agents in Masindi district. A source that attended the meeting told URN that Mbabazi denied the ongoing rumours that he is in talks with Col. Besigye aimed at Mbabazi stepping down.

Col. Besigye is due to address a rally at Masindi Boma Grounds on Friday evening. By press time, Besigye was on his way from Kiryandongo district but his supporters had started gathering at the campaign venue.
