More than 70 College tutors in Masaka district have defied a plea by the chief administrative officer, Joseph Mukwaya, to call off their strike over payments. The tutors from Kabukunge teachers College, Ndegeya Core Primary Teachers College and Masaka Technical College, went on strike on December 20th protesting non payment of their salaries. The tutors are demanding for more than 150 million shillings in salary arrears. During a meeting held on Thursday at the district headquarters, Mukwaya explained that the tutors' salaries had delayed because the finance ministry did not include their salaries in the 2006-2007 financial year budget. Mukwaya however asked the Tutors to call off the strike as the Administration works on ways of paying their salaries. But Mukwaya's appeal was heckled by the tutors, who also accused the district of sabotaging their payments. The tutors many who recently graduated in local language instruction, vowed to stay away from their job, for as long as it takes the administration to pay their salaries.
