Masaka High Court has ordered the District Chief Administrative Officer, Joseph Mukwaya, to clear all the pension arrears by October 17th. Masaka pensioners sued the district administration in December last year for failing to pay their annuities. The unpaid pensions dating back to October 2003 amount to 800 million shillings. The High Court in Masaka had earlier instructed a group of pensioners who sued the district administration to settle the case out of court. The order was made in response to a request by the Masaka district administration lawyer that a team should be appointed to amicably resolve the case with the pensioners. With no solution in sight, Justice Kibuuka Musoke today ruled that the Masaka Chief Administrative Officer should ensure that pensioners get their money before October 17. He warned that court would attach the district properties if the pension arrears are not cleared. Pleas by the Mukwaya to be given more time to look for the money were rejected. Kibuuka said he was disappointed by the way the district administration was dragging on the matter. More than 70 pensioners cheered as the judge passed the ruling. Speaking to the media shortly after the ruling, some pensioners described as unfair the failure by the district administration to clear their pension arrears. They also accused the district administration of diverting their money. //Cue in: iNga 17 #i Cue out: i# batudde.i//
