High Court has deferred the hearing of the bail application by former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye to Monday next week.

The bail application hearing had initially been scheduled for tomorrow. However, in celebration of Eid-el-Fitr, the presiding judge decided to push it to Monday July 11, Solomon Muyita, the Senior Communications Officer of the Judiciary says.

Dr Besigye, a runner up in the February 18 presidential election, is currently on remand on treason charges. He applied for bail on June 7 citing advanced age and uncertainty of when his treason trial will commence. Dr Besigye is aged 60.

Prosecution alleges that Dr Besigye and others at large between February 20 and May 11, planned to forcefully ascend to the Office of the President when he declared himself the elected president of Uganda. He is also accused of inciting residents to defy lawful orders to attend his illegal swearing in ceremony in a non-specified place.

In a related development, Muyita revealed that the team of judicial officers led by Nakawa Chief Magistrate James Eremye will be visiting Dr Besigye this Thursday to ascertain his living conditions in jail.

The visit by the members of the District-Chain-Linked Committee (DCC) followed persisted complaints raised in before Nakawa Court by Dr Besigye whenever he is before court saying his life was threatened and that his rights are abused in prison.
