Kitgum Magistrates Court officials and Police criminal investigation officers on Thursday held a meeting to find a way of improving security at the court premises.

The meeting which was summoned by the Kitgum Chief Magistrate Jamson Karameni follows an embarrassing incident which occurred early this week, when unknown thieves stole a safe deposit box from the office of the court cashier thinking that there was money in it.

The thieves reportedly overpowered the watchman and broke through the eastern gate of the court premises and took away the safe.

The watchman, Santo Langoya was detained at police for 2 days but was released on Thursday.

The meeting was convened to ascertain the possible motive of the thieves and to find out whether they were only after the money or had other motives.

There have been reports of thieves stealing high profile files from courtrooms from other parts of the country, and it is not known whether this could be one of them.

The Kitgum police criminal investigations officer, Ramanthan Doka said it is still too early to make conclusions as investigations are still going on.

He said police will come out with a statement in that regard and promised that security around the court premises will be improved.
