Heavy Rains Destroy Classrooms, Kill 8-Year-Old Pupil in Masaka

An 8-year-old girl was last evening killed, when four classroom blocks at St Mark Primary school in Namasavu village, Masaka District were destroyed by the heavy rains. The rains started at around 2:00pm but increased shortly after 3:00pm taking a heavy toll on the classroom blocks which eventually collapsed, trapping several children inside. Sharon Kyomukisa, a primary three pupil, died instantly while four other pupils and three teachers sustained serious injuries. The injured pupils have been identified as Prossy Namuyomba, William Nsubuga, Susan Mukamukanga and Apollo Sango. The injured teachers are - Sophia Kabanda, Isaac Mwazi and Christopher Lukandole were also injured. They injured were rushed to Namasavu Health Center 4 and later transferred to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, while the body of the dead child has been handed over to her parents for burial. The School headmistress, Gorrette Nyanzi, says the hail storm started at around 2.00 pm yesterday and increased after 3.00pm.
