The ministry of health is to hire 2000 midwives this financial year in a bid to curb maternal mortality in the country.

The recruitment was announced over the weekend by Dr. Christine Ondoa, the Health Minister.

Ondoa who made the pronouncement at a media briefing in Mbale said the ministry will recruit 2000 midwives to cover the acute shortage experienced by hospitals and health units around the country.

Ondoa said to meet the target, government will offer scholarships for people in hard to reach areas to study midwifery.

She says her ministry has also reached an agreement with the ministry of finance to recruit all interested intern doctors and midwives. The health minister said so far 150 interns have been recruited.

She also announced that government will with immediate effect start offering free mama kits to all mothers who turn up for antenatal care. The Mama kit includes items such as razor blades, gloves and cotton wool.

The World Health Organization-WHO recommends a ratio of three health workers to 1000 people. In Uganda the ratio is 1.2 medical workers to 1000 people.

In Mbale Referral Hospital, statistics indicate more than 1000 mothers turn up every month at the hospital for antenatal treatment.

The maternal mortality rate at the hospital is 3-4 deaths per month.
