Badminton star player Edwin Ekiring has maintained his lead in Africa for the men's qualifiers for the 2016 Olympic Games.


The Netherlands based player who has participated in two Olympic Games leads the men's singles chart in Africa ahead of 2012, 2015 All Africa Games gold medalist Jacob Maliekal from South Africa.


"I know I still have to keep working hard because the qualifiers will officially close in may next year," Ekiring told URN online from Netherlands. The former Nsambya Sharing Youth centre player said he is preparing to start the new season with the Iceland International Championship in January.


Last week Ekiring dropped in the latest world badminton rankings and the African continent.


In the ranking released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Ekiring dropped two places to 89th and second in the African continent with 19733 points.


Maliekal is now top of Africa and 81th in the BWF rankings. Maliekal improved by nine places after he reached the quarter finals of the Mersin Turkey International Championship.


Uganda's top female player Bridget Shamim Bangi also dropped to 201, while Kate Foo Kune (Mauritius) is top of Africa at 76th and Nigeria's Grace Gabriel is 82th.


According to the rankings China's Chen Long and Carolina Marin (Spain) remain the men and women's top ranked players respectively.
