Scores Feared Dead as Building Collapses in Makerere

Scores are feared dead after a building in which they were operating along Makerere Hill Road in Kampala collapsed this afternoon.

Seven people have so far been rescued from the rubble and rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment. Rescue teams led by the Police and Uganda Red Cross are have recovered three dead bodies from the rubble.

The search for survivors is ongoing.

The three-storied building near Ham Towers in Makerere housed Singh Motor Garage- an Indian owned business, a restaurant and a pharmacy among other businesses. A number of vehicles were also damaged and are now being towed to Wandegeya Police Station.

Moments ago, Police used tear gas to disperse angry residents who believe that their relatives are still trapped in the building. The residents wanted to take charge of the rescue operation saying the continued delays were reducing the chances of finding people alive.
