Kampala High court has found 82-year- old Hanifa Namuyanja and her grandson Hussein Lukenge guilty for the murder of Shamim Nalwoga in a ritual sacrifice. Justice Joseph Murangira delivered the ruling this afternoon, saying prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

According to court records, the duo murdered Shamim Nalwoga on December 17, 2012 at Kibalama zone, Lukuli in Makindye division in Kampala. In his ruling, Justice Murangira cited the testimony of the eight prosecution witnesses and the police pathologist, Dr. Sam Kalungi. In his testimony, Dr. Kalungi told court during the postmortem, he found deep wounds on Nalwoga's body and her private parts were cut off.

He also observed that the deceased's skin was peeling off due to the paraffin the accused had used to disguise the smell from her decomposing body. Justice Murangira said ruled that the prosecution had successfully placed Namuyanja at the crime scene where she was found by police staring at the body of her decomposing granddaughter in her house in Lukuli.

He dismissed the unsworn defense by Namuyanja, in which he claimed her granddaughter Nalwoga was murdered by another family member known as Hadijja Nasaka. During the mitigation process, the prosecution led by Charles Bogere asked court to condemn both Namuyanja and Lukenge to death or life imprisonment term to keep them away from the public.

However, the accused's lawyer, Ssenkeezi Steven Ssali asked court to consider Namuyanja's advanced age and give her a chance to live again by sentencing them to a caution and let them go scot free. After listening to both sides, Justice Murangira said he will deliver his sentence tomorrow morning.
