31 people in Kibaale district are admitted because of a suspected fresh cholera outbreak on the shores of Lake Albert. Godfrey Tibulihwa, the Acting Kibaale district health officer says the patients are from Kitebere, Sangarawo and Nyamasoga landing sites in Ndaiga Sub County. Tibulihwa says the first case was registered at Kitebere on Friday last week.

He says that blood samples from the patients have been taken to the government chemist in Entebbe for confirmation. Tibuhilwa explains that most of the patients have symptoms similar to cholera patients such as acute diarrhea and fever.
Oscar Chunyai, the Ndaiga Sub county LC3 Chairperson fears the disease could have spread to his area from Kaiso and Kyeharo landing site in Hoima district.

Earlier this month, more than 100 people affected by the disease on both sites killing two others. As a result, Kibaale district health department has dispatched a team of medical personnel to the affected landing sites to sensitize residents on proper hygiene and sanitation standards. Like other shores of Lake Albert, the sanitation on Ndaiga and Kitebere landing sites is appalling.

According to the district health report of last financial year, 90% of the households at the landing sites in Kibaale district lack latrines, which forces residents to dispose of human waste in the environment.
