High Court has given Kampala mayoral candidates Erias Lukwago and Peter Sematimba one day to sort out a conflict over Sematimba's academic qualifications. Lukwago, the outgoing Kampala Central MP, went to court to seek the nullification of Sematimba's candidacy. He claims that Sematimba doesn't have the academic qualifications necessary for him to stand for the mayoral position. Earlier this week, the Electoral Commission approved of Sematimba's nominations. It said nothing was out of order and he could stand for office. Erias Lukwago claims that he was never given an opportunity to present his case to the Electoral Commission and he wants court to rule on the matter. Justice Eldad Mwangusya today directed Lukwago, Sematimba, the Electoral Commission and the National Council for Higher Education to seek an out-of-court resolution to the matter. He said if no resolution is found, he will request for Sematimba's academic papers for analysis and judgment. Justice Mwangusya said the Electoral Commission had violated Lukwago's basic rights by denying him a hearing. He said the four parties should present themselves to his chambers tomorrow to brainstorm over the matter and to find a concrete solution. The judge said a prolonged case would be a waste of time. ###
