The operator of a building crane which collapsed in December, killing five people, has been charged with criminal negligence. Gerald Ogoola was manning the crane at the Aya Hilton Hotel building site in Nakasero on December 28th, when the crane lift failed. Three builders were killed on the spot and two passed away in hospital. Ten other people were seriously injured in the accident. Reading the case file details, the Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate Dorothy Lwanga said Ogoola failed to supervise the use of the lift, leading to the death of the workers. Ogoola pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was advised to apply for bail and was remanded to Luzira Prison until January 15th when the case comes up for mention again.
