The Ministry of Local Government has ordered the cancellation of a tender to run Iganga Taxi Park to YY General Contractors. In a letter to the Iganga Chief Administrative Officer, Local Government Minister Kahinda Otafiire said the bidding and tendering process for the management of the taxi park was irregular. The letter, dated December 27th, said he made his decision based on evidence provided by Iganga Taxi Operators and Drivers' Association, one of the companies that lost the bid. Iganga Taxi Operators and Drivers' Association charges that the district contracts committee didn't give it ample time to pursue its bid in line with regulations of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority. In the letter, made public by the Iganga Taxi Operators and Drivers' Association, Otafiire instructed that the bidding process should be repeated in a transparent manner. The letter to the Iganga Chief Administrative Officer has angered many people in the local administration. Dan Saire, the District Information Officer, says all appeals should be directed through the Chief Administrative Officer and the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority. He questions the intentions of the Iganga Taxi Operators and Drivers' Association in flaunting procedure and appealing directly to the Ministry of Local Government. Saire says the authenticity of the letter is suspect because of the manner in which it was made public.
