UHRC condemns Government interference in Media operations

The Uganda Human Rights Commission has condemned government for blocking journalist from covering court proceedings of the Besigye case. Journalists were yesterday morning denied entry into the precincts of court as Besigye filled in his bail application papers. The Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission Margaret Ssekajja has asked government to exercise restraint and allow the media to report court proceedings objectively. She said journalists have a role to help the public understand what is going on in the country. Ssekajja explained that the public including the media could only be denied access to a court hearing when the Judge decides to hold the case in camera. Cue in: iThe media is allowed#i Cue out: i#in open courti Meanwhile reports from Masaka indicate that the South Buganda Journalists Association (SOBUJA) have resolved to hold a demonstration today protesting government decision to block journalists from covering Dr Besigye case court proceedings. According to the SOBUJA chairman, Dismus Buregyeya, government has violated Media Freedom.
