Lira Municipal Council has resolved to increase the tax levied on Molasses by 50 percent. During a meeting held yesterday, the council resolved to increase the tax from 50,000 shillings to 100,000 shillings. The municipality environment officer, Dan McMondo, says the increase follows concerns by the council about the environmental effects of Molasses. Molasses are used in distilling local brews which are highly toxic. McMondo says that in addition to the toxic brew, the process of distilling the brew is dangerous to the environment and the council wants to discourage it.
