Mass Meningitis Vaccination Campaign in Yumbe, for Saturday

A mass vaccination campaign targeting people at risk of contracting the life-threatening disease, will be launched in Yumbe district on saturday. More than 200 cases of meningitis have been recorded in Yumbe, since the epidemic broke out four weeks ago. Yumbe has been recording 20 new cases per week, with a higher incidence recorded in men compared to women. Many of those affected are aged between 15 to 30-years. The District Director of Health Services, Dr Hassan Nasur, says the mass vaccination will target Yumbe Town Council and Midigo and Apo sub-counties, which have been most hit by the outbreak. Marie Hellene Houllier, from Medicines Sans Frontiers, says a consignment of vaccines from the World Health Organization in Geneva is expected in the district by Friday.
